Excellence on Ice Feature
Defining the Word “Total”

By Kent McDill

They call it “The Rinx Total Skating Program” and they mean every word.

The Rinx is the well-established collection of ice surfaces centered around the hamlet (an actual hamlet) of Hauppauge, N.Y. which sits between the Long Island towns of Islip and Smithtown.

Operating two outdoor rinks in the winter months in Port Jefferson and Wyandanch Village to go with the two indoor ice sheets at the central location in Hidden Park and the third sheet at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage, N.Y., The Rinx covers the figure skating needs of the area.

Fritz Dietl Award Winner – World Arena Ice Hall

By Kent McDill

There are places in the United States where figure skating is a major source of entertainment and a key component of the area’s culture.

But it would be difficult to find a place more dedicated to the future of figure skating in America than Colorado Springs, Colorado. It is, after all, home to U.S. Figure Skating and the U.S. Olympic training center.

There is likely no place in the country where the pressure is higher to maintain the facilities where the U.S. Olympic team trains. It is the pressure Allan Long deals with daily as the Director of Event Services at the World Arena Ice Hall, the home training facility for the Olympic team and the chosen training facility for the country’s best skaters.

The person who had some of the greatest influence on me as a skater was my Russian choreographer and off-ice coach Irina Yelchin. I began lessons with her at age 10 to beat some grace, strength, and conditioning into my enthusiastic yet under-trained limbs. At first I was not used to the Russian style of teaching and it certainly felt that everything I did was “terrible”. I remember she would have me run my program and if, at any point during the run-through, she felt that I was not giving 120% she would stop the music and have me restart from the beginning (and do so again and again).
