Physical Acting For Skaters

by: Michael Lee

What happens when you don’t breathe? The answer is pretty simple, right?

Such a beautiful activity, this ice dancing. For going on nine years now, I’ve been trying to figure out if it’s sport or art. I asked skater Dean Copely once, “So how long do you rehearse each day?” and he replied, “First of all, we don’t rehearse; we practice.” Aha, so you’re athletes.

Kelley Morris-Adair

by: Terri Milner Tarquini

It’s hard to find a hat that Kelley Morris-Adair hasn’t worn at some point in a professional figure skating career that has spanned 35-plus years.

But it’s the grassroots of skating that really gets her enthusiasm going

.“My passion is for the fundamentals of skating,” Morris-Adair said. “The basics of skating are what run through every aspect, every discipline of the sport. Take out the jumps and spins, and it all comes down to how a blade performs over the ice. If you can’t balance on a forward outside edge, you won’t have an Axel. If you can’t balance on a backward edge, you won’t have a Lutz. It’s that simple. And the benefits of what moves in the field can do toward teaching those things cannot be measured.”

PSA E-learning Academy /CERs
by: Ann Miksch

I am Ann Miksch, the one to call if you or someone you know has questions or needs help navigating the PSA E-learning Academy. With the January 1st opening of the 2016-17 U.S. Figure Skating Continuing Education Requirements (CERs), this is a good time for some helpful reminders.

Return To Open Professional Competitions (Part 1: The U.S. Open)

In this world, we are all in this massive hurry to go somewhere. Skaters are no different. Throughout their competitive careers, they are conditioned to the mindset of the necessity to achieve some lofty goal, some dream being the be all, end all.

Funny teaching moment happened when I was in Sweden. A boy came up to me in the middle of a clinic and said this in his broken English.

"I know what you are teaching me will make me better for tomorrow and down the road. But right now... You're just a pain in my a**!"
