My name is Lee Green and I am the web designer for the PSA.

Designing a website can be frustrating if you are new to the game, so below I have provided some helpful tips to make web building fun and easy!

I suggest starting from a readymade template. There are many helpful tools and web building programs that make it easy to begin creating your website: WordPress, Joomla and Drupal are just a few. These programs are designed with the beginner in mind.

Before you begin, come up with a plan of what you may want your site to look like and the information you want to include before you start the building process. Research other websites that you like to help you identify what you may want in your site

Keep in mind when design a website less is more. You want to make your site easy to use, functional, and eye-catching.

Easy to use
You don’t want to crowd your site with too many drop downs or links, especially on the home page. You want it to be clean and informational, but that the same time get you to where you want to go quickly and easily. The rule of thumb is three clicks or less to get where you want to be on the site.

You want your site to be simple to use. Links are still the easy and quick way to navigate in and out of your website. Adding links is like adding a shortcut. It is convenient for the audience searching your site and a good way to highlight important information that you want the audience to know. You may also want to look into making sure your website is responsive and can be seen easily on all types of devices.

Some people think when designing a website that you need to put lot of graphics and pictures on the site to make it look good. This is actually not the case. What you want is balance and to draw in the audience with graphics and pictures; rather than over-powering with graphics and pictures, aim to be inviting.

Color is a great way to draw the reader! There are many shades of colors and each represent a certain mood, feeling, or attitude. Certain colors work well together. Finding the right color balance is key.

Pictures are another way to attract your reader. A website is just a website without great photos; photos can give the website an identity. Photos make the reader engage with the website. If you are doing a website for the first time, I would suggest hiring a professional photographer to take some great photos for use on your site. Your site will then make a more professional statement for sure!

Graphics, like pictures, help give your site an identity. Pretty much all well-done websites have a combination of all three: pictures, colors, and graphics. When we say graphics, most people think of a logo design or a brochure. But graphics to a website can be something as simple as the positioning of text on a page or how the website is organized. Again, graphic design is extremely important! For beginners, I would suggest doing a little research. You don’t have to be a great designer to design an eye-popping website, but you do need a basic understanding of graphic design principals.

Designing a website can be fun and easy! A website is a digital brochure of you or your company. How do you want to communicate that to the world? Remember the key principles: easy to use, functional, and eye-catching. Simple navigation, clean lines of site, and well organized web pages will make you look professional and successful to the reader.

I hope these tips will help you in your web building adventure!
