2015 Fritz Dietl Award for Ice Arena Management

by: Kent McDill

In 1996, Nancy Mariani became the first manager of the Florida Panthers IceDen, the home practice rink of the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League.

Almost 20 years later, Mariani and general manager Jeff Campol are celebrating the rink’s selection as the winner of the 2015 Fritz Dietl Award for Ice Arena Management, awarded each year by the Professional Skaters Association.

The name says hockey, the weather says golf and tennis and swimming, but the award says Mariani and Campol have built a home for ice skating entertainment and training in an American city better known for, well, just about anything else of an athletic nature.

Testing Moves in the Field in Hockey Skates

by: Kelly Rossbach

Are you kidding? Why would anyone want to test their Moves in hockey skates? And is that even allowed?

Sean Pike is a 16-year old boy who figure skates, plays hockey, and is a member of the Southport Skating Club. In May 2013, he ordered new custom figure skating boots because he has wide flat feet.

In 1956, the first synchronized skating team was formed by Dr. Richard Porter. The Hockettes skated out of Ann Arbor, Michigan and entertained spectators during intermissions of the University of Michigan Wolverines hockey team. In the early days, precision skating (as it was then called) resembled a drill team routine. The first official team skating competition was held in 1976 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

I was giving a Preliminary Field Moves lesson this afternoon and I asked the skater if she understood what "extension " meant in the context of Moves. She said, "Oh, yes, it's something that makes the move not suck."
