Apprentice Program

Apprenticing offers an opportunity to work under a Master rated coach to learn new skills and update current ones. Apprenticeship involves: on-ice observation of private or group lessons, on-ice lessons to improve teaching techniques and off-ice discussions of teaching techniques, music editing, training schedules, tests and competitions, parental interaction, etc. Apprenticeships are offered in ll disciplines and at all levels. Certificates are issued designating the number of hours of study (minimum of 30 and adapted to the Individual).

The Apprentice Program provides an opportunity for professionals to improve their teaching skills by training with PSA Master-rated coaches.

Through this unique program coaches can share in the years of experience accumulated by the Masters. The Apprentice Program provides training in moves in the field, freestyle, dance, pairs, choreography, team and group instruction.

Who can become an apprentice?

  • Skaters with competitive or show experience who are making the transition to teaching.
  • Established professionals who are interested in teaching more advanced skating.
  • Coaches preparing for rating exams.
  • Experienced professionals who want to improve their teaching skills or learn a new discipline.

Eligibility

Available to any Full, Associate or Intern member of the PSA. Membership and Apprentice application and agreement are available through the PSA Office and are required to be submitted before beginning your apprenticeship. A separate application and agreement is required for each discipline of study.

Who benefits?

The Apprentice Program benefits coaches who are interested in self-improvement.

Since the success of our future skaters depends on superior instruction, the Apprentice Program greatly benefits students, clubs and rinks.

Curriculum

  • On-ice observation of private or group lessons given by the Master coach.
  • On-ice lessons from the Master coach to improve teaching techniques.
  • Off-ice discussions of teaching techniques, music editing, training schedules, tests and competition, parental interaction, etc.

The program recognises that each apprentice has unique goals, strengths and needs, therefore, the curriculum and hours of study are adapted to the individual.

Certificate

Certificates are issued designating the number of hours of study with a Master coach in specific areas of skating. These certificates can be used along with resumes to assure clubs, rinks or students that the professional has actively pursued training in coaching.

What does the program cost?

There is a $25 application fee for the apprentice program in each discipline at each level of study. All other charges for group or private lessons should be discussed in advance with the Master coach.

Coaches Manual

The PSA has developed a Coaches Manual which addresses many topics of interest to coaches including: writing a resume, conducting an interview, business practices, creative teaching and building a music library, tips from the Masters and Sports Medicine.

The manual is contained in a loose-leaf binder to make it easy to update with new material or with notes taken at seminars, conferences and master lessons.

The PSA Coaches Manual is a valuable tool for all professionals and can be purchased through the PSA office.

Audio and Video Tapes

A great way to educate yourself is to purchase audio and video tapes of keynote presenters from past conferences. A current list is published in each PS Magazine. An additional list of tapes is also available from the office including the Moves in the Field video.

How do I apply?

Begin by reviewing the guidelines for the Apprentice Program and fill out the Apprentice application and agreement . Mail the application and check for $25.00 (payable to PSA) to Professional Skaters Association, 3006 Allegro Park SW, Rochester, MN, 55902 or fax to 507/281-5491.
